The western Zodiac is over 3,000 years old and is thought to have originated in Mesopotamia. There is also some evidence in the cave paintings in the Lascaux Caverns that the system might have been developed as long as 17,000 years ago.
Bodyscapes began 42 years ago and have gained a world-wide following also! This new Bodyscape series brings the traditions together in a series of images that are both meaningful and beautiful. Like all of the Bodyscapes, these images are created by placing objects or figurines directly on the body and making a single exposure without photoshop. In this series, however, the image is augmented by our studio manager, Jo Zaza, to include a dramatic sky and the appropriate constellation. The figurines are custom, hand made glass sculptures commissioned from the artist Hugh Naggar (crystalglasscreations.com).
Whether or not we subscribe to the details of the astrological system, we all know and love the mythology and imagery which is associated with astrology. A Bodyscape Zodiac image combines sensuality with beauty, history and myth to produce a powerful statement about the relationship of our body and our spirit to the cosmos.
